A fine quality dish top candlestand with adjustable height mechanism this Regency period table-top example is in fine original and fully functional condition, retaining its turned and threaded screw knob fixing throught the decoratively ring turned stem, with ball baluster base above a turned collar which joins the generous disc-turned spreading foot. The base is weighted for safely and the turned details of the stem are well drawn and finely executed. Thought to have been predominantly used by needleworkers, lace makers and and embroiderers, these stands were used to adjust the height of a burning candle to maintain it at the convenient height to work by. This example has developed an appealing honey colour and well patinated timeworn surface.
