Esplanade Quay Stornoway

Esplanade Quay Stornoway

19 ¼” high x 23 ¾” wide (framed)

This image again features the Fish Market which stood on pier No1 until it was demolished in
1972. Its design is echoed in the Ferry Terminal on pier No 3 built in 1997. Amity House to the
left has survived remarkably unchanged. The pilot whales being hunted in the foreground refer
to an earlier incident in the 19th century when hundreds swam into the estuary. We still know
little about why this happens, but a similar incident occurred two years ago on Traigh Mhor
below my studio where 50 pilot whales died on the beach.
