Remarkable Early Rectangular Tray-Top Tripod Candlestand

The Moulded Framed Top above a Single Frieze Drawer
Richly Patinated Fruitwood, Ash and Elm
English, c.1740

26.5" high x 15 .5" wide x 14.5" deep

Ref: 11908

A most unusual example, this delightful little tray top candlestand has a two plank rectangular top which is framed with a raised "gallery" moulding, the top has a generous overhang above the box frieze which encloses a single drawer with original cast brass escutcheon and two tear drop handles and framed by a traditional "D" moulding, this is raised on an elegant baluster turned stem, with ring turned details, and supported by three shaped tripod legs, terminating in slipper feet. It is fashioned from solid ash, elm and fruitwood which have developed a rich nutty colour and a delightful timeworn patination. The diminutive scale, moulded rectangular top and small frieze drawer are features which combine to create a rare, possibly unique, piece of early vernacular furniture. Fully functional, enticingly proportioned and a great colour, this is simply special.
