Engagingly practical and functional, this traditional Georgian vernacular occasional table is the provincial cousin of finer examples fashioned from rare imported timbers and made for great houses. This more primitive example is fashioned from native oak and is delightfully simple in its form. The twin plank top is raised on three turned spindles, which are socketed into the lower circular tier and all raised on a traditional short tripod cabriole leg base terminating in slipper feet. The whole top revolves in classic “dumb waiter” fashion, perfect for bottles and glasses, lamp and books, playing cards, canapés and coasters. Engagingly rustic and probably originally made for a farmhouse or tearoom, it is a robust and well-drawn example with character and good historic patination.
