Exceptionally Rare Sailor's Traverse Board Of Classic Form with Clenched Hand Cresting Hand Carved and Painted Wood English or American, c.1780
13" high x 7 ½” wide x 1" deep
Traverse Boards are first recorded in 1627 and some remained in use in sailing ships until the beginning of the C19th. They were ingeniously designed navigation aids, used to record the course and speed sailed.
