“Three Shire Horses and Groom" English Naive School Equestrian Portrait

“Three Shire Horses and Groom" English Naive School Equestrian Portrait

Depicted Trotting in a Stylised Landscape
Oils on Canvas
English, c.1900

31.5" high x 38" wide (framed)

Ref: 11455

A boldly executed primitive animal portrait with an engagingly lively composition. The three powerful working horses are depicted well groomed, with shiny coats and brushed tails. Painted by an anonymous primitive hand, possibly a tavern and trade sign painter, there is little understanding of anatomy, but a wonderful sense of power and movement to the horses. This work fits comfortably in the British tradition of naive livestock and agricultural animal portraiture, with the additional benefit of the upright groom riding the nearest horse, enhancing the narrative of the composition. Painted in oils on canvas and of good large scale, it is in good condition, retaining excellent colouring and is presented in a bespoke made ebonised and parcel gilt frame, ready to hang.
