Engaging and Quirky Articulated Jig Toy

Engaging and Quirky Articulated Jig Toy

In the Form of a Man with a Bowler Hat
Wearing a Red Tunic, Blue trousers and Boots
Hand Carved and Painted Wood
English, c.1870

15.75" high x 3.75" wide x 2.75" deep

Comparative Literature: James Ayres, "British Folk Art"; Pub, Barrie & Jenkins, 1977. A Similar example is illustrated and described on page 56

Fully articulated at all joints and surmounted by a Bowler style hat, this engagingly sculptural child's jig toy is in genuine, "as found", time and play-worn condition. The historic painted surface is worn and rubbed in places and has suffered areas of loss, including particularly to the back side of the hat rim and front of the left boot. An honest survivor with integrity and the nostalgic playful aura of historic childhoods.
