With Stylised Facial Features, Elegant Neck and Draped Shoulders Hand Carved and Painted Walnut Northern European, c.1860
16.5" high x 10.75" wide x 6" deep
An unusual and elegantly stylised primitive portrait bust of a young woman, possibly made as a Milliner's Last, with unpainted crown to the head and simple black painted hairline over the forehead and temples. The reductive elongated face is carved with wide almond shaped eyes and a fine nose above generously carved lips, with the head and face raised on a fine slender neck and the shoulders are draped with naively carved folds of a shawl or wrap. The bust is in genuine original condition, retaining historic painted surface and details. An unusual, quietly simple and appealing primitive sculpture.
