Carloway was one of the first places I visited on the west coast of Lewis two decades ago. Being one of very few sheltered ports on the west side of the island it has remained active. Carloway itself is not visible being further up the winding estuary, but immediately opposite a few crofts split the rugged landscape. From an elevated position the protective stone slope gives the pier a slightly odd perspective, but I found it important to emphasise the winding nature of the estuary and the position of the pier within the first bend
