A powerfully graphic work by a known, but still anonymous hand, this bold and colourful naive portrait is painted in gouache and body colour on paper and is in excellent original condition. The central figure stands above a small flight of stone stairs in stylised landscape, beside her pet cat. The girl, with blue eyes and scraped back hair, is wearing a bright blue dress, white socks and black boots and is holding a posie of flowers in her left hand. The static landscape incorporates three houses and a church with a spire,and rolling hills/fields, separated by a winding road or lane. With provenance to an English Private Collection in Kent, this is one of four similar works, by the same hand, that we have handled and it is uncertain of they are of English or American origin. Whatever this is a fine and engaging naive child portrait in excellent condition.
