Bottle Carrier or Well Cooler

Weathered and Patinated Wrought Iron

French c. 1840

14.75” high x 10.5” wide x 10.5” deep

Condition: From the wine growing areas of France, these handmade wrought metal bottle caddies or holders were originally made in this robust form and material, in order that they could be lowered into the well to chill bottles before serving. Invariably painted to protect the metal, when found in original condition such as this example, they have great surface character and charm. This example was made to hold four bottles and is in untouched original condition. Few survive in such sound working condition and it is most unusual to find one that retains its original paint surface. A wonderful survival.
