Condition: A wonderfully sculptural piece, this working watering can dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Early examples exist in both ferrous metal and in solid copper, it is difficult to discern the English cans from the French, because both have a similar form, with a tapering top section and cylindrical can to the base and are constructed in the same way. The present example benefits from a magnificent large rose head sprinkler with a solid sheet copper face and a stylish loop handle, with a strengthening/connecting rod between them. There is evidence of much wear and use and many incidental working repairs. There is visible movement to the seam of the handle and the original paint surface has aged, weathered and oxidised. This ”as found” working condition lends further character and interest to an exciting survival of great character.
