Unusual Early Milliner's Head Form

With Stylised Facial Features
Hand Carved Wood with Pin Holes and The Patina of Use

English Midlands c. 1870

11” high x 6.25” wide x 8.5” deep

Ref: 37/31

With much evidence of use and wear, this working Milliner's Head has great sculptural interest and a rich patina. Unusually with stylised facial details and even a trace of historic red paint to the lips, it has a powerful presence. There are multiple pin holes to the surface, where many various hats have been held down to e styled and tweaked, which lend extra character and interest to the piece. We have handled several similar pieces in various materials over the years, but this stylised head has a most particular individual feeling about it, a flavour of genuine folk art.
