Wonderfully detailed, well observed, colourful ship portraits from the sketch book of itinerant late nineteenth/early C20th pierhead artist James Scott Maxwell. This group of four watercolours are in impeccable original condition and retain great colouring.
Scott –Maxwell is a well recorded painter, working on his own and studying only ships and marine life. He was effectively an “Outsider Artist”, working outside the mainstream and producing an exciting body of instantly recognisable work. These are particularly fine and engaging examples.
