The English word 'sampler' derives from the Latin 'exemplum', or the old French term 'essamplaire', meaning 'an example'. In the 19th Century samplers were increasingly being used as an educational tool for girls from all social backgrounds.
Lydia Ann Veryman is recorded as having been born in Milford Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire in 1832. She would have been 13 years of age at the time this was created.
