A very rare, early, well drawn and functional oval occasional table, this example is in excellent original condition. The generous oval plank top is pegged to the joined frame and has a rich burnished surface and lovely nutty colour. The four legs are baluster turned, joined by all round stretchers and retain their original feet. Possibly made as an occasional wine or ale table, it is one of only a handful known in this form and a real collector’s piece. With excellent provenance to a Private Collection in Lancashire this is a simple masterpiece from the early British Vernacular Furniture Tradition.
