In fine original condition, retaining the original hand painted primitive decoration depicting three delightfully naive figures to the lid and with stylised foliate, geometric and floral motifs throughout. Translated literally, these “Spaanaesske” are Headgear boxes and were used to store a bride’s treasured veil and headgear from the traditional wedding costume. This example comes from the Southern Islands and whilst it shows evidence of age and use, with some incidental areas of paint loss, scratches and bruising, it is in fine untouched original state and is a fine example of early Danish Folk Art.
