"Piers, Ports & Jetties" - An Exhibition by Tom Hickman

An Exhibition of recent works by Artist, Tom Hickman
Hickman’s recent series of ten embroidery works began when a neighbour offered him some old blankets destined for disposal. Instantly recognising their potential, Tom found the soft cream tones of the fabric provided an ideal background for his stitching, while the woven edges naturally framed the title strips. He started with a simple early weave and later transitioned to a twill, deliberately avoiding the fluffier, modern varieties that didn’t suit his technique. This choice reflects Tom’s ongoing dedication to working with reclaimed and natural materials.
The series is reminiscent of works by Alfred Wallis and Bryan Pearce—both iconic artists linked to St Ives, Cornwall, and celebrated for their primitive yet evocative depictions of seascapes, boats, and coastal life.
Tom’s embroideries capture a range of piers, harbours, fishmarkets, lighthouses, beaches, and ports across the Isle of Lewis—from the busy bustle of Stornoway to the tranquil jetties of Port nan Giuran and Calanais. The works often reimagine reality, repositioning landmarks like Lewis Castle or lighthouses to enhance composition and narrative. Using old photographs, personal snapshots, and historical references, Tom has stitched these rugged coastlines with a bird’s-eye perspective, creating works that celebrate the island’s rich maritime heritage.
Throughout the creative process—and the research and exploration it inspired—Tom discovered new places on the island that had previously escaped his attention.
