Sculptural Fisherman's Net or Rope Hanging Hook

Carved from the Solid with Integral Loop Hole
Weathered and Patinated Carved Burr Birch

Sweden c. 1780

10” high x 4.5” wide x 1.5” deep

A delightfully hand carved hook with integral loop, carved from a single solid block of burr wood. Originally created as a “tool”, made and hanging fishing nets and ropes in a fisherman’s shed. Now rare as such objects were discarded as obsolete and old fashioned as new materials became readily available.  However, now historic every day working objects have now taken on a great appeal to collectors, for their inherent sculptural qualities and textures as well as their historical narrative. This example shows signs of wear and use commensurate with age and function.
