Nest of Original Signwriter's Pigment Drawers
With Boldly Sign-Written Drawer Fronts
Hand Painted Pine with Original Handles
Inscribed with Initials and Date “1924”
English, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
England c. 1924
42” high x 49” wide x 9” deep
Condition: A rare nest of 12 sign writer’s pigment drawers with individually sign written drawer fronts and retaining the original pull handles. This flight of drawers is now presented on a contemporary bespoke make metal stand, as originally it would have stood on top of the tradesman’s workbench. There is much evidence of wear and use and many incidental areas of paint loss and scarring, however it is in generally fine working condition and has no significant damage or restoration. The reverse of one drawer is inscribed with a monogram and the date 1924, which though possibly not the exact date of manufacture is almost certainly painted by the sign writer himself. This is a terrific piece of genuine British Folk Art or Vernacular furniture and was discovered in an old studio in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.
