"Old Bright, The Postman"

By George Smart of Frant
Fabric Collage, Pen, Ink and Watercolour on Paper
In Original Burr Maple Frame
Retaining Smart's Original Trade Label and Verse to Verso

England c. 1835

22.5” high x 8.25” wide

Condition: A fine example of the fabric collage work of iconic British Folk Artist George Smart, the Tailor of Frant. This work depicts the figure of “Old Bright, the Postman” leading his donkey across the high street at Frant, near Tunbridge Wells, holding a letter and carrying his satchel. The village scene to the background was drawn and painted in watercolour by Smart and is a good early example, the donkey is created from a brown velvet fabric and Bright is created from felts and various other media. There is some sign of minor discolouration and staining to the background but generally the work is in excellent original condition and retains great definition. It is housed in the probably original wedge section burr maple frame and retains Smart’s original Trade Label to verso. This is a significant work of British Folk At by one of the most recognisable and highly considered masters of the genre.
