This charming small child portrait retains very good colours and has an engaging composition. The seated child in a white dress and wearing bright red shoes, is holding a whip for the spinning top shown in the left foreground, with an upturned cap and a carved horse form pull toy to the right foreground. It is now housed in a period moulded and gilt frame with gesso details, is a boldly executed example from the British Folk Art tradition. The surface condition and paint colours are in excellent state of preservation.

A delightful and sensitively detailed naive Military/Valentine Portrait of Scottish historical interest. Painted in oils on canvas, it is in excellent original condition and benefits from a wonderful rich palette and confident execution.

George Clarke was presented with the pipes that he is depicted playing, by the Highland Society, and which are engraved "To George Clarke, piper of the 71st, as a mark of the Society's approbation of his spirited and laudable conduct at the Battle of Veimeria Aug 21st 1808, in continuing to play upon his pipes to animate the men, after being himself severely wounded."
There is record of a print depicting the same subject, having been published on June 4th 1816, by Edward Orme, Bond Street, corner of Brook Street, London.

A good late nineteenth century British Naive School Still Life in oils on canvas, depicting a full Fisherman’s Creel with a day’s catch, fishing rod and a blue and white transfer printed dish, set on a ledge in front of a window. The canvas has been professionally re-lined and cleaned of old varnishes and surface dirt, to reveal the excellent original colours and delightfully detailed composition. It is housed in a period oak frame and gilt slip which is later inscribed on the reverse. There is a strong tradition of sporting paintings of this type in many parts of Britain, mostly anonymous created by amateur enthusiasts, of varying abilities, to record memorable moments and achievements in their sporting lives. The present example is particularly accomplished in a typical flat, static naïve manner, with the fish markings and woven creel being attentively observed and detailed, suggesting that the painter may have been a Tavern Sign or Coach Painter used to working in detail. This work is of unusually large scale and an impressive example of the genre, being both atmospheric and evocative of its period, whilst retaining the real sporting spirit and recording a memorable catch.
