We believe this carving to be a depiction of King George III in a red General Officer's coat, blue sash and Star of the Garter Medal.
George III ruled between 1760 and 1820 and was the longest reigning monarch at the time.
There is documentary evidence in the British Army Muster Books of a William Asbridge from Deal (Kent), who was listed as a soldier in the 4th regiment on foot during the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. The 4th regiment is said to have been at Waterloo starting off in reserve and then at the end being brought to the front line.
It is possible that this was a commemorative carving made by this man in 1817, who was a soldier in the British Army whilst King George III was still alive, although George IV was Prince Regent at the time.
