Oils on Board
A delightful and brightly coloured early naive racehorse portrait, this well composed image depicts the well known racing jockey Fred Archer on the racehorse Ormonde. The horse and jockey are depicted in profile in a typically static posture, with an ancient castle to the left background and a small river to the near foreground. This work is painted in oils on board and is in excellent original condition and housed in the (probably) original dark oak frame with a gilt slip. There is an old hand written label to verso reading simply “FRED ARCHER ON ORMONDE”. The bright colours and primitive stylisation of detail to the landscape, horses mane and tail and particularly the cap, facial features and silks of the jockey define this as a fine example from the school of British Naive Sporting Art .
