A wonderful example of genuine British naive art of the mid C19th. Painted in oils on pine panel, this work is proudly inscribed to verso "Drawn by John Rose, 1864". Depicting a building that was presumably known to him, with great attention to detail, including the stone block structure, drainpipes and even the tower roof tiles, the principle building also fills the work virtually to the edges. In common with the best works of Folk and Naive Art, it is painted without respect for the conventions of perspective and is wonderfully flat and two dimensional, with the addition of two perfectly charming figures to the near foreground, probably known to the painter. In genuine original condition this work represents much of the true spirit of British Folk Art.
