Naively Decorated with Two Windows and a Door
Boarded Pine Retaining the Original Painted Decoration
England c. 1880
24.50" high x 24.00" wide x 10.00" deep
Ref: 47/10
Most unusual paint decorated wall cupboard with naïve architectural details. Both centrally opening twin doors have blacked "windows" with white glazing bars painted to their top outside corners and an arched "door" is suggested in the central bottom corners and over the central style. The cupboard is fashioned from solid pine with single plank doors, together with metal butt hinges and brass pull knobs. There is evidence of use and wear commensurate with age and function and some remnants of children's writing on the timber, the top has a plain original cornice and the doors enclose a simply fitted interior with shelves. There is an engaging quiet simplicity and delightful naïve quality to this little cupboard, that has something of the qualities of line and proportion one would expect find with pieces of historic Shaker made furniture, although this is an English provincial piece, in excellent original condition.
